I’m not an ardent tennis fan, only started watching the game just to get something to discuss with Polar bear and Flo :), both of them like to believe they played lawn tennis when we were in high school, funny thing is I can only recollect them playing the game we call ‘okolo’, where we draw four quadrants in the sand and use the broken wood of our school desks as big bats, and I know they were well whooped hehehe; but since they both have tennis racquets in their car boots now, then its my memory that’s fuzzy.
I followed this US Open with interest with my eyes mainly (not manly) on Serena williams, the constant thing that comes to my mind when she serves is “avoid her slap at all costs” hehehe!
I wonder if her feats could be replicated here in nigeria, here is a girl nurtured and brought to stardom by her father and I wonder if I could do same for my kids and my friends for theirs!
It would be nice to have Nigerians (not like in the last olympics) winning the wimbledon and the US opens and other grand slams won’t it?
I have a daughter who loves drawing, a son who loves watching TV and playing computer games, another daughter who likes singing and dancing and one who finds it difficult slowing down; she sprints all around the house so much so when she manages to walk its on the tip of her toes!
How do I go about developing these talents especially since they all exhibit more than one talents each?
I also remember I used to be a good goal keeper way back in JS2 (I was short and feather weight) until Senior Kunle halted my career during a match between Johnson and Philips house, hehehe, his foot slammed into my mouth opening up a deep gash inside my cheek, I couldn’t eat for almost two weeks and took the decision to switch to table soccer hehehe!
So what’s the whole purpose of these stories, what if polar bear and flo had professional help? Would they have ended up winning international competitions? (From the size of their stomach these days, it would be like akpos becoming an astronaut).
I’m guessing its the 1.9m dollars prize money for serena tonight that’s inspiring my thoughts, hehehe!; as a good entrepreneur I’m getting my kids racquets, footballs, karaoke boxes, sprinting shoes all the works and giving their teachers instructions “don’t give my kids home works; they have their works waiting for them at home” hahaha
Congratulations Serena, but I will still avoid your slaps at all costs!

Good article. What Serena's father did for his daughters, same thing Tiger Wood's father did for him is not anomalous here in the US. Parents are heavily involved in helping the children get better at whatever sports they choose. Hence the reason why the us is a juggernaut in sports. Hopefully Naija will emulate these ideals and don't promote education alone.
